Santiago Oaks Opens New Trail Route

Improvements made to the Mountain Goat Trail to allow for use by equestrians.

A steep and rocky trail at Santiago Oaks Regional Park formerly used only by advanced hikers and the most skilled of mountain bikers is now open to more park users, including equestrians, thanks to a recent addition.

The revised Mountain Goat Trail, which opened March 14, still starts and ends at the same places, but the new section veers away from the steep areas, making it accessible to equestrians. The
original portion of the trail also remains.

The challenging trail was previously posted as “Not Recommended for Horses.”

The new enhancement section features switchbacks at gradual grades and no rock outcroppings, making the Mountain Goat Trail horse-friendly. Equestrians now have the opportunity to do a full-loop trail ride around the Santiago Oaks Regional Park.

Park Ranger Maureen Beckman leads equestrians on a ride down the new section of Mountain Goat Trail. The original, steeper trail appears at top right.

Hikers, as well as beginning-to-intermediate mountain bike riders, are also using this less-challenging route, but the original Mountain Goat Trail still remains for those seeking a challenging experience.

The new trail section was designed and built by Bellfree Contractors trail construction company, under the guidance and private funding from the non-profit organization Trails4All.
